New – Junior Kindergarten through Grade 2 – Magnussen Primary

For the 2011-2012 academic year, Magnussen School welcomes our first classroom dedicated to lower primary education (grades Junior Kindergarten through 2).  Continuing with the connection-based educational care that we employ in our middle and upper primary classrooms, Magnussen School Primary offers an academic environment where kindergarten through grade 2 children can build positive, sustainable connections with their teachers.  Our children will learn in an environment that respects individuality, develops student’s strengths, fosters growth, celebrates group achievement, and facilitates the commencement of a life-long love of learning.

Magnussen School Primary students enjoy the same access to stimulating, enriched academic and social programming as their older schoolmates.  Primary students will begin their day with their homeroom teacher for snack and share.  Then the class moves together with their homeroom teacher to our forest playground (The Rhododendron Wood) or one of UBC’s numerous athletic fields or community playgrounds for physical education and play.  The daily, hour-long physical education period is followed by circle time, math, and language arts (and numerous opportunities for an additional snack and/or drink along the way).

Soon thereafter, the class will break for lunch and return outside for another outdoor period with their homeroom teacher.  Finally, our school day concludes with the Day’s Special – a period at the end of each school day, when Magnussen School Primary students meet with the upper school’s science, art, or socials teacher for instruction.  These daily periods are designed to stimulate student interests in these areas of study and are largely hands-on and supportive of exploration.

Throughout the year, students will attend numerous fieldtrips and enjoy opportunities to work alongside student-mentors with shared interests from the upper school.  Student passions or areas of personal academic interest are nurtured in the classroom and regular in-school opportunities will be offered for students to learn more about their area(s) of interest.
