The Magnussen School was created with a vision to educate children with various learning characteristics and needs. We believe that all children have individual gifts that need to be recognized and further developed. As well, most children have learning challenges that must be understood and accommodated for an educational setting that facilitates their own gifts. Our goal is that students at Magnussen School will become active participants in their education and fully understand how they learn best.
Instruction:
Magnussen School will be following the British Columbia Ministry of Education curriculum requirements, but will also allow for differentiated instruction. That is, projects designed to meet the individual interests and learning styles of students will be developed and will encourage students to go above and beyond their own expectations. It is important that students have some choice in what they might want to study and learn within a given subject topic. Hands on activities will be encouraged as often as possible. Field trips and opportunities to work with professional mentors on the UBC campus, where the school is currently located, will facilitate active dialogue in current ideas, research and issues facing our world today.
To support or remediate any learning difficulties the Arrowsmith Program will be offered on a part-time basis during the academic day. For example, some children with significant gifts in reasoning and thinking may struggle with written output. The Arrowsmith Program would be able to assist in the remediation of the neurodevelopmental weakness. More information about the Arrowsmith Program can be found at www.eatonarrowsmithschool.com
